Massage

Massage that does more than feel good.

Licensed massage therapy at Boston Barbell - real soft-tissue work that helps you move better, recover faster, and train harder. Open to everyone, members and non-members alike. You don't have to lift here to book.

The approach

Hands-on work, with a reason behind it.

The same principle that drives our coaching drives our bodywork - understand the mechanism, then address it. Whether you're chasing a stubborn squat, sitting at a desk all week, or just carrying tension you can't shake, the work here is targeted: the specific muscles and tissue restricting how you move, not a generic rubdown. It's recovery that supports what your body is trying to do.

Ana is a Licensed Massage Therapist who's been practicing since 2014, and recovery work is where she's spent most of her career - which is exactly why she fits here. Her approach is therapeutic and specific: she asks the right questions to define your primary focus areas, works those first, then builds toward full-body recovery over time, using deep tissue, assisted stretching, tense-relax techniques, and cupping. She works with every body type and every activity level. She also offers face cupping for jaw tension and TMJ - releasing the clenching that's often the hidden root of stubborn neck pain, shoulder tension, and headaches.

@jamesthebodyworker

James Matthews works the seam between strength training and recovery. He spent 15 years coaching strength and 13 years as a Licensed Massage Therapist, and the two feed each other. A former Division I football player at Morgan State, he moved into massage and came to see the pair as one system: resistance training keeps muscle and joints durable, and good bodywork keeps you training through the wear. His aim with every client is the same - get you moving well and out of pain by using massage and strength work together, not as separate fixes. He specializes in deep tissue, myofascial release, and cupping, and tailors the work to the body in front of him.
